The SPIN is an electronic flow switch for water pumps, acting as a dry-run protection system vertical appliance. Unlike a basic mechanical pressure switch, SPIN detects water flow in the system (not pressure) and automatically manages the start and stop of single-phase pumps up to approximately 2 HP.

While it is not a flow meter giving actual flow rate readings, it is a switch that senses the presence or absence of flow and sends a signal to start or stop the pump. Classified as a “pressflow switch” (a pressure/flow switch combination), SPIN functions primarily as a flow switch protecting the pump, working alongside the system’s mechanical pressure switch.

Operating Principle

SPIN is installed on the discharge side of the pump (delivery line) and monitors water flow via an internal valve/flow sensor. On startup, the device allows the pump to run and keeps it on as long as water flow is detected. When flow drops to zero (e.g., taps close or water supply is depleted), SPIN activates an internal delay timer. After this preset delay, it cuts off power to the pump unless flow has resumed.

This shutoff delay is adjustable and ensures the pump doesn't stop during brief flow pauses, giving it time to pressurize the system or fill a pressure tank. SPIN also restarts the pump automatically when flow resumes. It can even detect minor gravity-driven flow from an elevated tank and use that to restart the pump when a tap opens.

Conversely, if no flow is detected and pressure doesn’t increase to trigger the mechanical pressure switch, SPIN concludes that the pump is running dry and stops it after the delay. A red alarm LED blinks when no flow is detected, and stays lit when the pump is shut down due to dry-run.

SPIN includes a manual reset button and supports automatic restart attempts—typically every 60 minutes, up to 4 retries—allowing automatic system recovery when water becomes available again. Note: for the shutdown to be triggered, SPIN requires pump current of at least ~1 A; very small pumps (<200 W) may not be detected properly.
