How to Choose the Right Water Meter

How to choose the right water meter.

Choosing the right water meter is crucial for accurate consumption measurement, efficient water resource management, and compliance with applicable standards. Depending on the application, installation conditions, and type of use, different types of water meters are available to meet every requirement.

The reckless use of water resources over previous decades, combined with uncontrolled drilling and the lack of a legal framework, has caused serious problems in water supply, mainly affecting the irrigation of agricultural areas. Illegal boreholes over all these years have further aggravated the problem.

The problem has worsened to such an extent that the state is forced to take, on the one hand, preventive measures and, on the other hand, strict enforcement measures, in order to limit losses as much as possible. One of the most important preventive and control measures is the installation of water meters in water supply networks, boreholes, etc. In developed countries, water meters are used in every residential and commercial building connected to the public water supply system.

Water supply meters are classified into single-jet wet type water meters, single-jet dry type water meters for cold & hot water, multi-jet wet type water meters, multi-jet dry oil-filled water meters, and multi-jet dry type hot water meters.

Wet type water meter installed on a water supply pipe during operation

Wet type: In wet type water supply meters, the transmission of motion from the impeller to the recording mechanism is mechanical, allowing water to enter the mechanism.

Dry type water meter installed on a water supply pipe during operation

Dry type: In dry type water supply meters, transmission to the recording mechanism is magnetic. The measuring mechanism is housed in a sealed chamber and does not come into contact with water, is frost-resistant, and ensures clear readings over a long period of time.

Single jet water meter installed on a water supply pipe during operation

Single-jet: In single-jet water supply meters, the passing water rotates an impeller. The rotational speed of the impeller, given a specific inlet cross-section, is translated into the volume passing through, measured in cubic meters or cubic feet.

Multi jet water meter installed on a water supply pipe during operation

Multi-jet: In multi-jet water supply meters, the volume of water entering the meter chamber moves a piston or a disc, and this movement is converted in a specific way into a measurement of the volume of the passing fluid (volumetric water meter).

Oil-filled multi jet water meter installed on a water supply pipe during operation

Oil-filled: These water supply meters feature protected oil-filled chambers.
